About

Overview

The Alaska AIR artist residency program at Bunnell Street Arts Center seeks international, US, and Alaska artists to create new work and deeply engage the center's community. The program selects residencies that strengthen community and address themes such as accessibility, inclusion, sustainability, stewardship, skills sharing and exchange, connection, joy, and enhancing community well-being.

Program Details

  • Residency length: 2 weeks to 1 month, generally scheduled October through May
  • Housing: Private housing off campus (individual apartment/cabin/house) or private bedroom in shared facility, partially accessible
  • Studios and facilities: Shared studios, exhibition/installation space, performance facilities, piano, darkrooms, printers, scanner, drawing benches, printmaking workspaces, textiles workspace, fiber arts workspace, washer and dryer
  • Meals: Some meals provided (at least 2 meals); residents have access to shared kitchen

Community Engagement

Artists are expected to participate in public programming, open studio with fellow residents, give artist talks or presentations, teach in studio, lead workshops for the public, and/or lead skill shares.

Award & Support

  • $2,000 artist stipend
  • $250 travel stipend
  • Lodging and studio/gallery space included
  • 1-4 fully-funded Alaska AIR residencies awarded annually; additional or partially-funded residencies may be awarded as funding and scheduling permit

Eligibility

Open to artists based anywhere in the world at any stage of career. May apply as a team for collaborative residencies.

  • Statement of intent and residency proposal with preferred months and any special needs
  • Resume
  • Work samples: up to 5 images, up to 3 audio clips (max 15 minutes total), or up to 3 videos (max 15 minutes total); writers may include up to 10 pages written work as PDF or .jpgs of pages, audio/video clips of readings; minimum 3 work samples required
  • $25 application fee (needs-based waivers available)
