About

Overview

Kunstnarhuset Messen is an art centre in the heart of the Hardangerfjord in Norway offering artist-in-residence programs for emerging and established artists, musicians, writers and progressive thinkers of all disciplines. The centre is housed in a spacious 1918 building with three floors (420 sq. metres) and accommodates up to 7 guests at a time. Residents live and work together with other guest artists and local artists who have permanent studios in the building.

Residency Duration & Accommodation

  • Minimum 1 month, maximum 3 months
  • Private sleeping room
  • Shared kitchen and bathroom
  • Private studio/workspace

Location & Setting

Located in the small village of Ålvik in the Hardanger region, famous for its beautiful landscape and rich cultural heritage. The house is 25 meters from the fjord and offers easy access to mountain hikes. The centre provides hand tools and a cellar with materials that artists can use for free.

Fees & Support

  • 1000 NOK per month (contribution to energy costs)
  • Artist covers all other expenses: living costs, travel, materials, insurance and transport

Program & Expectations

Approximately 40 artists are invited annually for residencies lasting 1–3 months. Residents are expected to participate in an Open Studio evening/Artist talk held the last week of each month (open to the public) and to collaborate with local schools for art education.

Selection & Dates

  • Selection made once yearly in September by a professional committee
  • Application deadline: 31 August
  • Residency period starts from the beginning of the month
  • 2027 residency runs: 4 January – 31 October
