About
Overview
For 30 years, Fundaziun Nairs has offered an interdisciplinary, international residency programme near Scuol in the Lower Engadine, Canton of Grisons. Housed in a historic bathhouse on the banks of the River Inn and surrounded by mountains, the residency brings together nine cultural practitioners and thinkers from diverse disciplines to live and work under one roof. In an era of increasing acceleration, fragmentation, and societal uncertainty, this location offers a rare space of possibility: a place for contemplation, concentration, and in-depth engagement with the artistic, intellectual, and societal questions of our time.
Duration and Accommodation
Minimum stay is 2 months; maximum stay is 10 months. Various living and working arrangements are available depending on the resident's practice and needs, including smaller or larger rooms with combined or separate living and working spaces. All private.
Disciplines and Focus
Fundaziun Nairs is open to all cultural disciplines, with a focus on visual arts, performance, music, and experimental writing (including literature, scholarship, and curation). Given the linguistic diversity of the valley, multilingual writing practices are particularly encouraged.
Facilities
The residency offers writing studios, visual arts studios, and a music studio with a grand piano. A terrace and garden are available for outdoor work. Residents cook together in the evenings in the communal kitchen.
Fees and Support
Fundaziun Nairs is a privately managed, non-profit institution that relies on public and private funding. While the residency covers the majority of the cost per residency spot, residents contribute a portion of the expenses. For 2027, the monthly contribution is 950 CHF, which includes food provisions.
Expectations
Once a month (usually on the penultimate Saturday, 4 to 6 pm), the Gir d'AIR takes place. This is a tour of the residents' studios led by Fundaziun Nairs staff. The event is open to the general public; in addition, cultural professionals are specifically invited to attend, creating opportunities for networking and exchange. Participation by residents is voluntary.
