Overview
The Mondriaan Fund offers Art Commission grants to anyone without intention to sell the work who wishes to commission visual artists to create new works of art accessible to the public in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. The fund supports commissions from organizations, institutions, companies, municipalities, and other parties in the public and private sectors.
Who can apply
Anyone except individual artists, art education institutions, post-graduate institutions, and predominantly sales-oriented commercial art institutions. This includes public and private sector organizations, cultural institutions, municipalities, social and community organizations, schools, hospitals, churches, associations, and foundations. Applicants must be established in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
What qualifies
Grants are for the production of publicly accessible works of art, including single commissions for one or more artists, longer collaborations (up to 4 years), or new work production within a 4-year period. The work must not be for profit and must be accessible to the public in the Netherlands or the Caribbean.
Artist requirements
The commissioned artist must either be working at least 1 year as a professional visual artist registered with the Kamer van Koophandel (KvK); have at least 3 years of higher art education plus 1+ year of professional practice; or have 3+ years of professional visual artist experience. The artist must be artistically active and embedded in professional visual arts practice in the Netherlands and/or Caribbean.
Grant amounts
The amount is individually determined for each application and can be awarded as: a grant covering no more than 50% of production and presentation costs for a concrete commission; a grant for an exceptionally longer collaboration with an artist, totalling no more than 50% of costs for up to 4 years; or a grant for the development phase of a commission, totalling no more than 70% of costs, up to a maximum of €15,000.
Development funding
Potential clients outside the museum and professional art circuit can apply for funding to develop their project, including professional expertise and costs for the study or sketch phase of the commission.
How to apply
Applications can be submitted at any time of the year using the Mondriaan Fund's online application system. You must establish an account first. Allow 3 months processing time from full submission, though processing may take longer due to high application volume. Grants cannot be awarded retroactively.
