Overview
The Black Artists Grant provides £500 monthly grants to black artists in the UK. These are no-strings-attached funds to support new work, equipment, materials, travel, research, exhibitions, conferences, or other artistic needs.
Eligibility
- Black artists in the UK
- Professional visual artists with an active, developing practice
- Artquest Exchange membership required
- Must meet at least three of the professional criteria listed below (or be a current UAL staff member plus two other criteria)
Professional Criteria
- Regularly making and exhibiting artwork
- Received professional grants or awards
- Organising self-created opportunities (artist-led projects, peer mentoring, exhibitions)
- Socially engaged, participatory, or community-based work
- Commissioned by a public institution
- Artwork purchased by a public collection
- Work reviewed or featured in art journals, magazines, newspapers, or selected online platforms
- Represented by a gallery
- Participated in a recognised residency or artist placement scheme
- BTEC/Diploma/degree/MA/PhD in visual or applied arts
- Currently studying for BTEC/Diploma/degree/MA/PhD in visual or applied arts
- Current UAL teaching, academic, professional, or technical staff (plus two other criteria)
Accepted Media
- 2-D flat unique works (painting, drawing)
- 2-D flat reproducible works (photography, text and artist books, printmaking)
- 3-D works (sculpture, installation)
- Time-based works (performance art, artist video/film/moving image, sound art, socially engaged practice)
- Digital, new media, or online artworks
- Craft-classified works
- Interdisciplinary combinations of these media
Application Tips
- Fully complete the 'About me' and 'About my work' sections with at least a short paragraph
- Avoid temporary or placeholder text
- Include links to view your work online (artist website, arts organisation pages, professional social media)
- Provide web links and work description if unsure your practice fits the visual arts definition

- £500 per selected artist
- Distributed monthly to three selected artists (totalling £1,500 monthly)
