Artists and other creative professionals can stay and work elsewhere temporarily by participating in artist-in-residence programs and other residency opportunities. These opportunities offer conditions that are conducive to creativity and provide their guests with context, such as working facilities, connections, audience, etc.

No artist-in-residence programme is the same. Each programme or guest studio has its own background and atmosphere. Working periods differ enormously: from two weeks to six months or sometimes even a year. Some specialize in one discipline, others are open to a great number of disciplines. There are also many differences in financial resources, housing and studio facilities, application and selection procedures, coaching, exhibiting, and networking.

Many different artist-in-residence models exist. A general division can be made between: AiRs that offer space and time without any condition, where you may focus on contemplation, research, creative inquiry, process, experiment without any tangible outcome; and AiRs that ask for a tangible outcome such as an artwork, exhibition, project, workshop, collaboration, or specific assignment.

Different profiles and models exist, ranging from short-term, nomadic residency projects to long-term residencies connected to companies, museums, research institutes and universities. Some residencies are embedded in a social community to which visiting artists are required to commit themselves. Others thrive by offering retreat from social obligations. Different disciplines also require their own specific way of use and offer of the residency concept.
