A visual artist is someone with an active practice creating new artworks in 2-D flat unique works (painting, drawing), 2-D flat reproducible works (photography, text and artist books, printmaking), 3-D works (sculpture, installation), time-based works (performance art, artist video, film and moving image, sound art, socially engaged practice), digital/new media/online artworks, works often classified as craft, or interdisciplinary combinations of these.
