About
Overview
Cemeti Institute for Art and Society, founded in 1988, is the oldest platform for contemporary art in Yogyakarta and offers residencies for visual artists to develop their practice in dialogue with local artists, curators, communities, and activists. The residency includes a studio space, local working visits, support from the Cemeti team, and public activities highlighting residents' work.
Work Period
1 March 2027 – 31 May 2027 (one 3-month residency period available).
For Whom
Visual artists can apply. Duos or partnerships may apply if each submits a separate application and they work together structurally in one shared space during the residency.
Subsidy & Costs
The Mondriaan Fund provides €8,772 per artist to cover travel expenses, material costs, and living costs, with a required 10% personal contribution. For duos/partnerships, the amount increases proportionally. Studio and living space are paid directly by the Mondriaan Fund to Cemeti. Artists from the Caribbean part of the Kingdom may receive increased contributions for higher travel costs.
Application Deadline
Submissions must be in English and received by Thursday 26 February, before 16:00 Dutch time (11:00 Caribbean time).
Selection
An advisory committee reviews applications and proposes candidates to Cemeti Institute for Art and Society, which makes the final selection. An interview may be part of the selection process. Processing time may exceed three months.
Residency Activities
Residents will be introduced to local artists, curators, researchers, art spaces, collectives, and communities. Public activities will highlight residents' work. Each artist may present their work in a form of their choice: exhibition, publication, website, workshop, lecture, or meeting.
