About
Overview
The Mondriaan Fund, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto, offers visual artists, curators, and observers the opportunity to live and work in Kyoto for 3 months. The residency is located in the centre of the historic city near the Imperial Palace. Residents are supported in realising their projects and strengthening their contacts with the Japanese cultural field. The starting point is that residents with a contemporary vision respond to the history of the place, the customs and crafts, in interaction with the local community.

Facilities
The living and working space are located on the first floor of Villa Kamogawa. Residents have a living and working space with a kitchenette, access to a communal kitchen and terrace, and a separate shared studio. Three residents stay in the building per period.
For Whom
The residency is open to visual artists, curators, and observers. It is also open to artists with children under the age of four. Duos (2 artists who structurally create work together) may apply; each person must submit a separate application. Collaborations can be considered as duos if they submit a joint plan for the working period that leads to one result, and both must live and work together in one space during the residency.
Funding
- €10,400 subsidy for artists (€7,544 for curators/observers) to cover travel, materials, and living costs
- €20,800 total for a duo (proportionally increased)
- 10% personal contribution required (automatically deducted from subsidy)
- Higher contributions available for artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom to cover increased travel costs
