About
About the Fellow
Masha Ru is an artist with a Ph.D. from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. Her artistic practice has centered on geophagy since 2011.
Research Focus
Masha's research investigates the theoretical background of geophagy—the act of eating soil and soil-like substances such as clay and chalk. Her inquiries include whether engagement with the earth through eating is an important cultural tradition that should be preserved, and what constitutes health and edibility. Geophagy is an ancient spiritual and healing practice still present in many African, Asian, and Latin American countries, where clay is sold as an edible product in markets. In Western contexts, geophagy is often regarded as a psychological disorder and included in the DSM-IV.
Artistic Practice
Masha's performances and installations invite audiences to taste various types of soils and ceramics and to use them as cooking ingredients. She has worked with chemical analysis of clays and classification of soil tastes. Her residency work at NIAS continues her project "Pimba: Closing the gap," subsidized by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK).
