Overview

The Inside-Out Art Museum Residency offers visual artists, curators, and art observers a 3-month working period to develop their practice within one of Beijing's leading independent platforms for contemporary art and research. The residency emphasizes artistic research, experimentation, and dialogue while building connections with Beijing's vibrant cultural landscape and an international network of practitioners.

Work Period

There is one 3-month work period available: 1 March – 30 May 2027. IOAM operates a flexible residency model and will work with the selected artist to schedule the residency appropriately starting within the month of March. The start date will be selected by IOAM in dialogue with the artist; applicants should state their preference on the application form.

For Whom

• Visual artists and curators may apply for a residency
• For duos or collaborative partnerships, each person must apply separately
• A duo is defined as 2 artists, 2 curators/observers, or a combination of these who structurally create work together
• A duo must live and work together in one space during the residency
• Per period there is room for 1 artist or duo

Funding

The Mondriaan Fund provides subsidies to help cover travel expenses, material costs and living costs: €8,478 for an artist or €5,622 for a curator or art observer. This sum is for 1 person. Selected residents are expected to pay a 10% personal contribution. The costs of studio and living space and support from Inside-Out Art Museum are paid directly by the Mondriaan Fund. For duos, the total amount increases proportionally to cover additional travel and living costs for the second applicant. The contribution for artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to meet higher travel costs.

Public Programming

An essential part of the residency consists of public and semi-public formats developed with the museum team. During the residency, participants will present aspects of their research, process or practice through a public activity such as an artist talk, workshop, screening, lecture, open studio, publication or other format appropriate to the project.

Cultural Exchange Context

This residency is part of broader cultural exchange initiatives between Dutch and Chinese artists as both countries approach the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. The exchange is supported by a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on Culture, with the core message 'Designing Shared Futures' to expand opportunities for co-creation and long-term collaboration.
