About
Project Overview
Church Street Retaining Wall Mosaic is a completed public art project in Norfolk, Virginia. A retaining wall measuring 200 feet long and 3 feet high, consisting of 31 panels, was selected for a mosaic mural. Artist Poetry Jackson was selected to create the mural design, which fosters cultural identity, pride, and connection within the St. Paul's community.
Design Description
The mosaic features a palette of blues, golds, purples, greens, and natural tones with warm inspired hues. The design uses a selective mosaic system with negative space and wave elements connecting key moments. Images represent faith and heritage, with depictions of nature, local flora and fauna, and shared community memories such as playing in flooded waters and roller skating.
Installation Details
Poetry Jackson worked with a Virginia licensed contractor to complete all labor and secure necessary equipment, tools, and materials. Services include cutting and laying tiles according to design, preparing and priming the wall, transferring and adhering tiles in place, grouting and sealing tilework, and providing a two-year warranty of craftsmanship for artwork and installation.
