About
Overview
Artist Basic is a grant from the Mondriaan Fund for visual artists to expand their oeuvre, increase visibility, and support professional development through creation of new work, research, experimentation, purchase of materials or equipment, execution of commissions, and participation in exhibitions or events.
Eligibility
- Visual artists professionally active for a minimum of 4 years
- Aggregate taxable income not exceeding €55,000 per year for the previous 2 calendar years
- Not currently enrolled in higher education (bachelor, master, post-academic, or post-graduate programmes)
- Artistically active and embedded in professional visual arts practice in the Netherlands and/or Caribbean part of the Kingdom
Award
€44,000 paid in segments over no less than 2 and no more than 4 years.
How to Apply
Applications can be submitted at any time of the year using the Mondriaan Fund's online application system. You must first create an account. Processing takes approximately 3 months from submission, though may take longer due to high application volume. Grants cannot be awarded retroactively.

Previous Grants
Artist Basic grants can be awarded no more than once every 4 years. Artists previously rejected on grounds of artistic performance may not apply for 12 months after the first application date. You cannot apply while receiving other Mondriaan Fund support that covers the same costs.
Assessment
The Mondriaan Fund staff review applications for completeness. Complete applications are submitted to a committee that assesses the quality of your work and artistic practice, your working plan, and how you seek audience for your work.
