Overview
A four foot tall steel sculpture forming the American Sign Language sign for 'I love you,' created by artist Bob Doster in collaboration with students from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. The sculpture features hand shapes traced by students on steel sheets that were cut and patched together.
Location and Installation
The sculpture is installed at the corner of Senate and Lincoln Streets in the Congaree Vista Cultural District in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. A sister sculpture was installed in downtown Spartanburg, SC where the School for the Deaf and Blind is located.
Project Details
The project was funded through a grant from the South Carolina Arts in the Basic Curriculum Program and the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind Foundation, totaling $10,000. The project began in 2017 with students from both Columbia and Spartanburg locations.
Key Figures
SCSDB Fine Arts Director Josh Padgett conceived the idea and obtained funding. Artist Bob Doster, known for his stainless steel palmetto sculptures, served as lead artist for the project.
Dedication
The sculpture was officially dedicated on October 23, 2019. The dedication event included remarks by Mayor Steve Benjamin and Dr. Page McCraw (President of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind), and a special performance by the SCSDB Chorus.
