Get matched →The Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis opens its competition to select up to 16 residents for the 2027-2028 promotion. The residency runs from September 1, 2027 to August 11, 2028 and is open to artists, writers, creators, art historians, conservators, and researchers already professionally engaged.
Open to all nationalities, ages 18+. Applicants must be French-speaking (application submitted in French), already professionally engaged, and have never previously been a Villa Médicis resident. Individual and collective applications are accepted; each selected person in a collective receives the award individually.
Full-time residency in Rome is mandatory with effective presence required. Regular professional activities or responsibilities requiring continued involvement may be incompatible with resident status. Absences outside Italy are limited to 30 days for the entire residency (except exceptional authorization), and each trip outside Italy should not normally exceed two consecutive weeks.
Applicants must present a precise, feasible artistic or research project coherent with their professional trajectory. Explain clearly why a year in Rome is decisive for its development. Both individual and collective projects are acceptable.

Application deadline: October 16, 2026. Application must be submitted in French in a single PDF not exceeding 20 MB, with documents named according to imposed rules. Incomplete or non-conforming applications are deemed inadmissible. Only one application per calendar year is allowed.
No additional production budget is provided during the residency; all costs for creating works or research must be financed from the 42,000 € stipend. The stipend is gross; social contributions and taxes remain the resident's responsibility, including possible later URSSAF contributions. Selection is based primarily on the strength of the project; priority should be given to the project note and portfolio.
