Overview
Black Lawrence Press invites immigrant writers in the United States to submit full-length poetry, prose, or hybrid manuscripts for consideration in its Black Lawrence Immigrant Writing Series. The series provides a dedicated home for new immigrant writing and is overseen by an editorial and advisory board composed of immigrant writers and authors whose work explores the immigrant experience.
Eligibility
Open to individuals living in the United States who identify as immigrants and who meet at least one of the following criteria: born in another country; have at least one parent born in another country; are refugees; or live in the United States under asylum or a protection program such as TPS or DACA. Poets and authors at any stage of their careers are welcome to submit.
Manuscript Requirements
- Poetry manuscripts must be at least 45 pages
- Hybrid manuscripts must be at least 100 pages
- Chapbooks are not accepted
- Manuscripts may be poetry, fiction, nonfiction, or hybrid texts combining poetry and prose
- Up to two manuscripts per author may be submitted each year
Key Dates
- Manuscripts received after May 31 are considered for the November reading period
- Manuscripts received after October 31 are considered for the June reading period
- One manuscript is typically selected during each reading period, for up to two books published through the series annually
Awards
Selected authors receive publication through Black Lawrence Press, marketing support, a standard royalties contract, and a $500 travel stipend that may be used for book tours or at the author's discretion.

There is no submission fee.
