Literary Projects

Overview

Toronto Arts Council (TAC) provides funding to professional, non-profit Toronto literary organizations and collectives to pursue one-time or time-limited literary projects involving production, presentation, magazine publishing, and other activities that contribute to the development of the literary arts in Toronto.

Key Dates

• Application Deadline: March 16, 2026 (for projects after June 1, 2026)
• Application Deadline: August 4, 2026 (for projects after November 1, 2026)
• All projects must be completed within two years of the Notification Letter date
• Information session: February 25, 2026

Grant Categories

• Production, Presentation and Professional Development: supports costs of producing and presenting performances and professional development activities including artistic fees, production and technical costs, marketing and publicity, event documentation, and administrative costs
• Magazine Publishing: supports editorial, production, distribution, and promotion costs of independent, non-profit literary or arts magazines in English or French; expenses must include contributor fees

Eligible Activities

Production and Presentation projects include literary festivals, conferences or symposia, workshops, Writer-in-Residence programs, and series or performance events featuring readings, storytelling, dub poetry, and spoken word. Magazine projects include arts magazines publishing original criticism and literary magazines publishing fiction, poetry, non-fiction, hybrid genres, comics, and graphic works.

Funding Details

• Maximum grant: $8,000
• TAC will not fund 100% of project budget
• Applicants must indicate a range of revenue sources, which may include donated goods and services
• Applicants may receive less than the full amount requested

Eligibility

Applicants must be either an incorporated non-profit organization or an unincorporated collective operating on a not-for-profit basis. Organizations and collectives must be located in City of Toronto (Post Office Box addresses do not qualify). For collectives of two artists, both must be Toronto residents; for larger collectives, the majority must be residents. Artists must be professional. Literary and arts magazines must have been publishing for a minimum of 6 months prior to the deadline.

What This Program Does NOT Fund

• Projects already started or completed prior to results announcement
• Organizations or collectives receiving TAC Operating funding
• Schools (public or private) and educational/religious institutions (unless clear separation between regular activities and arts activities)
• Individuals
• Ongoing operating costs and general administration
• Equipment purchase, capital projects, fundraising, deficit reduction, archiving, awards and ceremonies
• Projects for film creation or competitive purposes, art therapy
• Activities outside City of Toronto
• Book publishing, lifestyle magazines, scholarly journals, magazines for political reportage or commercial promotion, religion/spirituality, or student-run/university-affiliated magazines
