Overview
PHI Contemporary is an architectural project integrating three heritage buildings and an adjacent site at the intersection of Bonsecours and Saint-Paul Streets in Old Montréal. The project balances modernization and preservation, with the winning architectural design by a consortium of Berlin-based Kuehn Malvezzi and Montréal-based Pelletier de Fontenay and Jodoin Lamarre Pratte selected from 65 international submissions.
Design Approach
The contemporary intervention is characterized by a quiet architectural presence with high glazing and lower profile, allowing historic buildings to emerge while creating meaningful public spaces including an interior courtyard, rooftop terrace, and central reception hall. The design weaves historic and contemporary materiality without clear spatial dichotomy, creating a palimpsest that reinterprets the site.
Facilities
PHI Contemporary will feature six exhibition galleries, an auditorium, and generous public circulation spaces. Exhibition spaces integrate historic stone walls alongside purely contemporary areas, accommodating a wide range of artistic mediums and practices. The reception hall is housed within the historic Viger House, while educational programming is located in the Maison du Calvet.
