Open Book is Burnaway's new hybrid literary book club held in-person and virtually. The program features selected books each season—fiction, non-fiction, essay collections, and other forms of published writing that touch on art and Burnaway's coverage region of the South and Caribbean. In-person events are held in different locations across the coverage region (Atlanta, the Caribbean, the Carolinas, and New Orleans), with virtual events on Zoom held within the same week.

The inaugural selection is Hothouse Bloom by Austyn Wohlers (published 2024 by Hub City Press). Burnaway's Editor and Artistic Director Courtney McClellan will lead discussions.

  • Virtual book club: Tuesday, September 15, 7–8 PM EST
  • In-person book club in Atlanta at Larakin: Wednesday, September 23, 6–8 PM EST

A young woman renounces her painting career and human relationships to become one with her late grandfather's apple orchard. Her idyll is interrupted by an old friend's arrival and the hard demands of turning a profit. As the outside world invades through pickers, contractors, neighbors, and pomologists, what began as renunciation becomes a new obsession. The novel is described as "painterly, strange, and razor-sharp."

Hothouse Bloom is available at A Capella Books in Atlanta or online through Hub City Press.
