About

Twice a year, Artpace invites a guest curator to choose three artists to live and create art in San Antonio for two months. Each residency cycle includes one international, one national, and one Texas-based artist. Resident artists are encouraged to push their creative practice, which must result in a new exhibition. All art made during the residency belongs to the artist.

Selection Process
Artpace invites internationally-recognized curators to select the resident artists. Unsolicited applications for the International Artist-in-Residence program are not considered. For Texas-based artists, Artpace hosts an online Texas Open Call with submissions considered on an annual basis for a statewide database used by guest curators.
Curator Role
One guest curator selects three artists—one international, one national, and one Texas-based—for each residence. The guest curator recommends selections one year before the residency and conducts fieldwork in studios statewide. The guest curator returns for the Public Opening Reception and moderates the Artists' Dialogue with residents. Guest curators also contribute scholarly essays about the work of each resident.
Public Engagement
While in residence, artists are encouraged to share their ideas and become involved with the San Antonio and Texas art communities. Public programs such as Open Studios and Artists' Dialogues connect audiences with Artpace resident artists.
After the Residency
The work created is exhibited for two months at Artpace and goes on to appear in private and public collections worldwide. Artpace's physical and online archives provide permanent access to residency documentation and scholarship, including scholarly essays authored by guest curators.
