Moonchild follows jazz pianist, composer, and mentor Yusuf Salim from his early years playing on Baltimore's Pennsylvania Avenue to his celebrated contributions to the emerging jazz and Black Muslim communities in Durham, North Carolina. Salim's deep faith and embrace of human connection transformed the world around him. During his 60-year musical journey, he inspired and propelled the careers of award-winning musicians and vocalists. Acclaimed jazz artists reunite in Durham to honor this unsung mentor and perform Salim's music at historic concerts. Brother Yusuf's life offers timeless lessons of hope, redemption, and empowerment within Black American, Muslim, and jazz histories.

Filmmakers
Kenny Dalsheimer is an award-winning filmmaker, producer, and media educator based in Durham, NC who founded The Groove Productions in 1996. Rafael Samanez is a Peruvian documentary filmmaker and editor based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Samanez received the 2018 Princess Grace Award/Honoraria in Film and is a 2023 Jerome Foundation Fellow. "Moonchild" is his directorial and editorial feature length documentary debut.
