About
Overview
The Jack Straw Writers Program introduces writers to recorded audio, develops their presentation skills, encourages new literary work, and builds community among writers. Participating writers are presented in live readings, published in the Jack Straw Writers Anthology, and featured on the SoundPages literary podcast and radio broadcast.
Selection
Approximately 12 writers are selected annually from a large pool of applicants by an invited curator based primarily on the excellence of work in submitted materials, with the goal of curating a demographically and stylistically diverse group.
The 2027 Curator
Harold Taw is a playwright, novelist, and multi-form writer. A 2011 Jack Straw Writing fellow, his debut novel was Adventures of the Karaoke King (Lake Union Publishing 2011). His work has appeared on NPR, in The New York Times bestselling anthology, literary journals, podcasts, and The Seattle Times. His screenplay Dog Park was a 2023 LA LGBTQ+ Film Festival winner. With The 5th Ave Theatre's Writers Group, Harold wrote the book for two musicals: Persuasion (2015), based on Jane Austen's final novel, and The Missed Connections Club (2014). Persuasion premiered at Taproot Theatre Company in 2017 and at Lamb's Players Theatre in 2018. He also wrote the book and lyrics for In a Better World: a Multiverse Musical and the original play C[Y]PHER, which will have its world premiere produced by Pork Filled Productions in August 2027.
Program Activities
Participating writers receive training in vocal presentation, performance, and microphone technique to prepare for public readings, interviews, and studio recording. Their recorded readings and interviews are used to produce programs for the SoundPages literary podcast and selected radio broadcasts.
Timeline
The first Writers Program mandatory meeting will take place in January 2027. Allow at least five weeks after the submission deadline for the review and notification process to be completed.
