About
Overview
La Wayaka Current's Desert 23°S program invites artists and creative practitioners to conduct research and develop their creative practice in the Atacama Desert at the National Nature Reserve of Flamingos. The region offers optimal conditions for astronomical observation and preserves ancient archeological sites. Residents will engage with local ecology, indigenous knowledge, history, and culture while exploring contemporary socio-political concerns and contributing reciprocal social and economic benefits to local communities.
Program Duration & Accommodation
- 3 weeks with option to extend to 6 weeks on specific dates (shorter or longer residencies available upon inquiry)
- Accommodation in a rural desert oasis on an indigenous family farm with no phone signal or internet
- Shared rooms (private rooms available on request prior to arrival)
- Communal shelter made of earth, recycled, and natural materials
Who Can Apply
Open to artists and creative practitioners worldwide, including musicians, writers, curators, activists, and scientists.
Studio & Practice
Participants will use the outdoor desert environment as their studio, with daily interactions with the local environment serving as their source of learning and inspiration. Residents are encouraged to be resourceful and respond to local methods, materials, and basic tools.
Expectations & Opportunities
Artists are free to choose whether to participate in programmed activities alongside their self-directed practice. Depending on the nature of their project, residents may have opportunities to showcase works or work-in-progress.
