In 2003, the Glacier Art Museum, Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation, Flathead National Forest, Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest have joined forces to create this unique residency. In 2024, the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest was added to the partnership. During the summer, selected artists hike into a remote backcountry cabin 5-15 miles from the trailhead in the Flathead National Forest or Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest for 5 and up to 16 days to create work in a beautiful, remote setting, which is then shared in a public presentation or workshop with the community. To date, over 60 artists have participated in the program, which consists of three components: Artist Residency, Forest Experience, and Community Extension. Artists benefit from having a remote setting to focus on their art and the community benefits from the work and presentations created from the artists’ experiences Apply APPLICATIONS FOR 2026 ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED. Her work seeks to explore human relationship with the land, the role textiles play in daily life, and where the two intersect. She is interested in the history evident in textile work, and how we carry that history forward into our own lives. Lefler’s works are inspired by stories, photographs, memories, inherited traditions, and places near and far; seeking to make works that are functional and will grow and change with time.www.etsy.com/shop/ConfluenceQuiltsinstagram.com/confluencequilts/ Pretty Prairie Cabin: Karen MintonKaren Minton is an artist based in Whitefish, MT, whose current work explores the concepts and methods of the Tonalism movement of the late 1800s. Through a careful study of light, value, and mood, her oil paintings draw from familiar landscapes, transforming them into meditative spaces that invite viewers not just to observe, but to be immersed in a sense of peace and stillness.www.karenminton.cominstagram.com/kmintonartist/ Shaw Cabin: Madeleine “Maddie” Tucker and Emily RoachEmily Roach is a wildlife biologist and artist who uses her knowledge and experiences with wildlife to inspire her art, and vice versa. She explores themes of nature and wildlife, striving to convey a sense of whimsy with accurate portrayals of the natural world. One of her main goals is to ignite a sense of empathy and connection between her audience and the subjects in her pieces. Emily specializes in watercolors but enjoys incorporating other mediums into her work as well. Her mission is to get others engaged in nature and art and to foster easygoing and creative spaces for others. In her free time, she loves hiking or backpacking with her dog, painting (obviously), snowboarding, aerial silks, and crafting of any kind. larksong-studios.squarespace.cominstagram.com/larksong_studios/ Maddie Tucker is a visual artist and musician born and raised in Missoula, MT. She began creating art as a little girl, drawn to the natural world as her primary subject matter. In college she took an oil painting class on a whim and fell in love with the medium. Since graduating in 2020, she’s continued to hone her craft primarily as an oil painter, and began participating in local art markets in the summer of 2025. An avid trail runner, climber, and mountain biker, Maddie has always found peace in movement. She tries to infuse her artwork with the electricity that she feels when she’s in motion, or observing the movements of the world around her.maddietuckerstudios.cominstagram.com/mads_music_art/
