Get matched →Safemuse is a Norwegian NGO offering safe residencies for artists facing censorship, threats, or who cannot work freely in their home country. The residencies focus on artistic development, collaboration, and providing safe professional environments for creative work.
Two residency locations are available: Oslo Art Haven in the capital with a thriving cultural scene, and Hvitsten Art Haven, a small coastal community 45 minutes from Oslo. Both programmes facilitate all artistic genres and disciplines.
The programme covers all costs including travel, accommodation, living expenses, and insurance. Safemuse assists with visa applications, though artists are responsible for preparing required documentation. The residency does not offer an extension of stay.
Each residency typically lasts six months. Prior to arrival, Safemuse will create a plan for content and goals with the artist. A team consisting of a residency coordinator, mentor, and advisors will coordinate the residency. Artists are not required to produce or present work, and the residency offers the possibility of rest and recuperation.
The programme facilitates collaborations with Norwegian artists and institutions, helps explore presentation opportunities, and works closely with the artist on desired exposure levels. Risk assessment is conducted together with the artist. Participation in outreach programmes is optional.
Programmes are for 2027/2028. Be aware that visa and permit applications to Norway may take up to eight months, and the residency programme will most likely start towards the end of 2027 or in 2028.
Hvitsten is a small coastal town with approximately 300 inhabitants, idyllically located along the fjord, 6 kilometers from the nearest store. Oslo Art Haven is in the city centre or a short metro-ride away. Both offer safe, professional environments.
