About
Overview
The AFA distributes funding to artists and arts organizations through two primary mechanisms: operational and arts presenting project funding (determined by formula calculation) and project funding (awarded through competitive expert panel process).
Project Funding Assessment
Project funding is assessed and awarded through independent expert panels. Panels typically consist of three members who evaluate applications based on artistic merit, impact, budget, and the applicant's ability to carry out the project.
Expert Panel Composition
Expert panels are assembled to reflect expertise required for each set of applications and to promote diverse representation, including artists in various stages of their career, artists from different locations around the province, different gender identities, Indigenous artists, culturally diverse artists, Francophone artists, and Deaf artists and artists with disabilities.
Panel Deliberation Process
Expert panels meet in person in Edmonton to evaluate applications. Members receive online access to all eligible applications through GATE prior to their meeting. The panel must decide together which projects should be recommended for funding and the amount of funding to be provided. Panels may recommend partial funding or establish conditions that must be met before grant payment.
Conflict of Interest
Panel members are required to declare any conflict of interest and withdraw from adjudicating any application(s) in question.
Join an Expert Panel
Anyone may nominate a potential expert panel member, including themselves. Download the Expert Panel Handbook, complete an Expert Panel Nomination Form, and email the completed form to the AFA.
Feedback and Transparency
After funding notifications are released, the AFA shares general comments from expert panels. Expert Panel members' comments provide a summary of the panel's assessment and do not necessarily relate to every application submitted to each deadline. Individual comments are not provided.
